MGL Avionic Stratomaster Attitude Compass Compas
- MGL combine the most advanced and miniaturized components for magnetic field and inertial measurement in a compact format weighing 125 grams (SP-6, SP-7)(without cables).
- A small housing (SP-6/SP-7/SP-9: 88 x 73 x 30mm) combines three gyros, up to three axis accelerometers and/or a three axis magnetometer plus two independent micro processor systems.
- Data is available on
- "Airtalk" link (SP-6, SP-7, SP-9)
- CAN (SP-6, SP-7, SP-9)
- RS232 (SP-6, SP-7, SP-9)
- Compass and/or Attitude information can be displayed on any combination of:
- The following modules are available:
- Ref: MGL_SP-6 - SP-6 magnetometer/electronic compass with advanced in-flight calibration algorithms for correction of hard and soft iron magnetic errors caused by ferro-magnetic materials in the aircraft.
Using a newly developed, unique method the SP-6 is able to cancel out the effects of magnetically active parts and materials on board the aircraft without any form of external aiding. Very high levels of heading accuracy can be achieved even in very compromised mounting locations where the combined effects of field distortion levels exceed the strength of the Earth's own magnetic field.
The SP-6 dramatically simplifies electronic compass installation and elliminates the need for ground based compass swings and calibrations.
The new advanced algorithms have been introduced in production models from July15th 2013 onwards. Previous SP-6 models can be updated to the new firmware by the user or MGL representative using a freely available Windows based application.
The SP-6 contains a three axis magnetic field sensor (magnetoresistive type) and a 3 axis accelerometer (MEMS). The system uses a ARM Cortex M3 32 bit processor.
If a SP-7 AHRS is used on the same communications link, tilt compensation can be performed using gyro based attitude data. This compensation is performed in the display device (EFIS). If the SP-6 is used without external AHRS, tilt compensation is performed using the internal accelerometer.
Weight 125g approx. (without cables). Dimensions 88 x 73 x 30mm
- Ref: MGL_SP-7 - The SP-7 contains a three axis MEMS gyros and a MEMS 3 axis accelerometer. A Cortex M3 32 bit processor is used to provide stabilized attitude information. Together with a SP-6 magnetometer on the same airtalk or CAN communications link the gyro heading can be automatically slaved to the magnetic heading.
Weight 125g approx. (without cables). Dimensions 88 x 73 x 30mm
- Ref: MGL_SP-9 - High grade ring gyro based AHRS and built in SP-6 magnetometer for magnetic heading. The SP-9 employs latest micro-machined ring gyroscope technology for performance that approaches FOG class ability in practical applications. Adding ORION class high accuracy accelerometers results in an IMU grade AHRS.
Note: The SP-9 is manufactured in low quantities due to its specialized nature. If you would like to order this device please allow for some lead time. This system uses specially selected and calibrated gyroscopes that are available in limited quantities.
Specifications:
AHRS
Gyro rates: Up to 300 degrees/second any axis
Accelerometer: G force measurement up to 16G
Low drift, high immunity to vibration
Magnetometer:
In flight calibration for 3D deviation compensation
External SP-6 can be used in case internal SP-6 is not suitable due to mounting location restrictions
Weight 150g approx. (without cables). Dimensions 88 x 73 x 30mm
- The reason for splitting the compass and horizon system (they were
combined in the SP-3HC as in many other systems), is to allow better overall performance. In many aircraft it is difficult to find a suitable location that is good for both sensors. Now, you can place the SP-6 compass in a wingtip if required and place the gyros (SP-7) close to the center of rotation to maximise performance from your horizon system.
- The SP-6 & SP-7 combination or the SP-9 are a full
function AHRS (i.e. a system that not only measures rotations and
acceleration forces but can do the very difficult task of using that
information to work out how your aircraft is located relative to the
earth surface).
- What do you need? See the "Configurations" paragraph below.
- The SP-x modules are packaged with a male DB9 connector.
- Total weight approximately
145g (SP-6(125g) + DB9 connector)
145g (SP-7(125g) + DB9 connector)
170g (SP-9(150g) + DB9 connector)
- Download the manual: SP6-SP7.pdf
- Download the manual: SP9.pdf
- If you need to integrate a heading or attitude measurement in your application, the output format of the SP-x modules is available.
